About Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation surgery is a procedure that adds volume to breasts to result in a fuller look.
With the help of implants or fat from the patient’s body, this enhancement surgery improves breast shape and size, and it results in a gorgeous and youthful outcome. Northern California plastic surgeons Dr. Francisco Canales and Dr. Heather Furnas are experienced in implementing this treatment and perform numerous breast augmentations every year. When you have your consultation at Plastic Surgery Associates of Santa Rosa, we will assess your aesthetic desires and concerns, and we will inform you of all of the choices available while also customizing a treatment plan to exceed your personal goals.

During your initial consult, the appropriate implant will be selected based on your body size and shape, as well as your desired outcome.
Implants for augmentation are made in an assortment of shapes, sizes, profiles, and textures — each of which is considered carefully in order to reach the desired outcome. Still, the most commonly used implant types are silicone or saline, both widely popular and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In accordance with the FDA guidelines, women considering implants made with saline must be at least 18 years old, while patients must be a minimum of 22 years old in order to undergo treatment with silicone. Many women younger than 22 still choose silicone implants with the full support of their plastic surgeon—though some breast implant manufacturers may void the warranty if placement occurred before the age of 22. Other considerations include a form-stable implant known as a gummy bear implant and fat grafting (known as a fat transfer). In addition to the type of implant used, there are other distinct factors to decide.
Breast implant size is distinguished based on the cubic centimeters (CCs) of saline or silicone used. To choose the right volume, we will measure how much native breast tissue exists and the size you hope to achieve. In the operating room, it is normal for Dr. Canales or Dr. Furnas to temporarily switch out various implants to get a better idea on a suitable fit.
Implants come in either a teardrop or round shape. Both of these shapes are widely used; however, most of our patients choose a round implant. It generally looks and feels more natural while adding fullness to the top of the breast which many patients look for.
Implant profile equates to how far out the implant looks (projection). In other words, this is what is visible from the side angle. Most projections include low to extra-high ranges.
Making Your Choices
We understand all of the considerations may be overwhelming, but choosing the appropriate implant is somewhat easy once the patient’s desires are understood during the consultation. These considerations, coupled with the skill of Dr. Canales and Dr. Furnas, help to ensure the anticipated outcome is met.
Learn About Breast Augmentation In Northern California.
Breast augmentation in Northern California is right for a variety of women.
The decision to go through with breast augmentation in Northern California is personal. If you are thinking about having this procedure, it is essential you do it for yourself and no one else. You should be healthy with breasts that are fully developed and be the proper age to have implants. If you are unhappy with the aesthetics of your chest because they seem flat, you could benefit from this cosmetic breast treatment. Moreover, if your breasts have changed due to aging, nursing, or weight loss, this surgery can give them life with increased shape and fullness. It is a welcomed option if you work out with weights or have little to no original breast mass.
How It Works
Incision placement, as well as implant location, are factors that are generally made ahead of surgery.
During breast augmentation, the chosen incision is created, and then the appropriate breast implant will be placed into its position. There are two techniques that may be chosen for implant placement. These are either under the pectoral muscle or behind the breast tissue but over the pectoral muscle. Where to insert the breast implant depends on varying factors, including the overall type and size of the implant along with the expertise of our plastic surgeons. No matter where the incision is placed, scarring is usually minimal. Placement and location are based upon your implant size, activity level, and body type.
What to Expect
Breast augmentation in Northern California is an outpatient procedure with the patient under general anesthesia.
We perform a technique known as Rapid Recovery Breast Augmentation to minimize any swelling or bruising. Following the incision, the chosen implant will be moved through the incision opening and placed into a surgically created pocket using a no touch technique with a Keller Funnel, and then secured into its correct position. Once the implant is in position, the incision is carefully secured with dissolvable skin sutures.
After the Treatment
Each patient will be taken to a private recovery space and monitored prior to being released. You will be instructed to continue wearing a recovery compression garment and, around 48 hrs later, a bra to help reduce swelling. Several days after surgery, any bruising and swelling will begin to slowly go away, and the breasts will start to look and feel normal as they fall into their new position. Most patients can engage in everyday light activities within a 7-14 days; however, physical exertion, such as exercise, should be delayed for approximately 6 weeks.
Follow-up appointments need to be made at our Santa Rosa, California office so we can evaluate your healing and results. Your recovery will be different, depending on the amount of fat that is taken and grafted, but you need to plan to spend a couple of weeks to rest and heal.
Breast augmentation surgery results in excellent outcomes that feel and appear both normal and natural. This procedure can be a life changer for many women, offering them the opportunity to feel more comfortable in their clothes and bathing suits.
How much will my breast augmentation cost?
A variety of factors can affect the total cost of a breast augmentation procedure. These include the type of implant (saline or silicone, textured or smooth, round or anatomical), incision site, and the complexity of the surgery. At Plastic Surgery Associates, a breast augmentation with saline or silicone implants will generally cost between $8000 and $10,000. This price includes the surgeon’s fee, the anesthesiologist’s fee, the cost of the surgical center, the breast implants, and all follow-up appointments. You will only be responsible for the cost of prescriptions, transportation, and any optional at-home supplies like compression garments. During your consultation at Plastic Surgery Associates, Dr. Furnas, and Dr. Canales will determine the exact cost of your breast augmentation procedure. Our goal is to make your breast augmentation as easy and affordable as possible, so during this visit, our patient coordinator will go over all of your payment options, including how to apply for medical financing through CareCredit, if needed. Dr. Furnas and Dr. Canales have performed over 5,000 breast augmentations and they use a rapid recovery method of breast augmentation. All of us at Plastic Surgery Associates look forward to your visit.
Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?
Your plan might include implants, a lift, or both. Breast lift surgery removes loose skin and raises the breasts while implants enhance the shape and size. In your consultation, we will listen to your concerns and goals before discussing your treatment options. An augmentation and lift are usually included in a mommy makeover to revitalize the breasts after breastfeeding and pregnancy.
Can I breastfeed with implants?
If you want to breastfeed after augmentation surgery, talk to Dr. Canales or Dr. Furnas during your consultation. It’s usually possible to breastfeed after augmentation surgery with the right placement and technique. Breastfeeding and pregnancy can affect your results, which is why it is better to wait until your family is complete to get breast surgery.
Can I have my implants removed?
You might decide that you would like to remove or replace your implants. Should this happen, Plastic Surgery Associates of Santa Rosa offers breast revision surgery. In revision surgery, your old implants will be either replaced with different implants or removed. If you want to have your implants removed, you might need to have a breast lift because larger implants may stretch your skin. For any concerns or questions after your augmentation surgery, schedule a consultation at Plastic Surgery Associates of Santa Rosa to learn more about your options.
Do implants cause breast cancer?
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is investigating a link between implants and ALCL (anaplastic large cell lymphoma). This isn’t breast cancer, but it is a cancer of the immune system. According to WHO (World Health Organization), implant-related ALCL is very rare, and if caught early, it’s highly treatable. We encourage all patients with implants to get frequent screenings for breast cancer. You should contact Plastic Surgery Associates of Santa Rosa if you see any concerns, like swelling.
