We all crave for a flatter tummy but sometimes even with rigorous exercise and strict diet it’s not enough to remove that bulging tummy and loose skin. As we age, the structures in the abdomen are subject to variable conditions that make the muscles weak and the skin loose. Due to various conditions like inadequate diet, lack of physical exercise, pregnancy and even sudden weight loss can all contribute to the weakening of the abdominal area.
What can we do?
Many surgical treatments have been proposed, and yet the tummy tuck has been known to achieve higher patient satisfaction. A tummy tuck, otherwise known as abdominoplasty is a plastic surgery that gives flatter tummy. The only downside with a tummy tuck would be the permanent incision on the abdomen and possibly the navel.
Types of Abdominoplasty
There are two types of tummy tuck – a mini and a full.
A mini tummy tuck is for individuals who have issues on the lower abdomen, while a full abdominoplasty is for the upper and lower abdomen.
A mini-abdominoplasty consists of shorter incisions while keeping the belly button as is. This type of tummy tuck is primarily for men or women who presents loose skin on the lower abdomen below the belly button.
In contrast, a full abdominoplasty involves incisions from hip bone to hip bone. The muscles beneath the skin are tightened together to give more strength to the muscles (Muscle Plication). This tightening is the reason why patients undergoing abdominoplasty with muscle plication feels tight on the abdomen after the surgery.
With a full tummy tuck, the navel is repositioned. The excess skin starting from the old navel going down to the pubic area is excised, and the remaining skin above is pulled down and stitched – to make up the horizontal incision. Finally, a new hole is created to make the new belly button.
The tummy tuck is one of the most performed plastic surgery and its combination with liposuction has increased more and more throughout the decade. Liposuction with abdominoplasty, also known as lipoabdominoplasty, is considered to be an excellent procedure for patients who have excess fat tissues and loose abdominal structures. With lipoabdominoplasty, the excess fatty tissues are initially removed before surgically excising the skin. This technique gives shape and contour to the body.
Both mini and full abdominoplasty present a successful procedure for treating bulging tummy and loose skin. However, choosing the correct surgery is dependent on the symptoms, and structural deformities presented.
