Dr. Jeffrey Fellner of Arrowhead Lakes Dentistry in Glendale, Arizona talks with Sleep Better TV about veneers and lumineers, as a cosmetic option for adult patients.
Veneers are thin, porcelain coverings over the tooth and with a veneer, a dentist can now mimic a healthy, natural tooth without adjusting the tooth excessively, says Dr. Jeffrey Fellner, dentist in Glendale, Arizona. For the most part, he adds, veneers are cosmetic procedures that don t cause a lot of destruction to the tooth.
Lumineers are exciting, says Dr. Fellner, because they are a special type of porcelain that allows the manufacturing of the veneer to be extremely thin and with that thinness, they can be very strong. Thin veneers are prone to breaking, according to Dr. Fellner and he hasn t seen a lumineer break yet.
Dr. Fellner says the beauty of lumineers is that he doesn t have to remove a lot of tooth structure and and because there is no adjusting of teeth, no anesthetic is required. There are also no temporaries because there is no adjusting of teeth. The first visit is nothing more than taking an impression and during the second appointment, the veneers are bonded to the teeth.
The bonding technique with lumineers is more conservative because there is no cutting of the tooth structure. Dr. Fellner says the prep work involved is just cleaning the tooth with a cleaning agent that provides a stronger bond than traditional veneers.
Most of Dr. Fellner s adult patients at his Arrowhead Lakes Dentistry practice don t want to go through orthodontics and just want to have a nice smile. With lumineers, Dr. Fellner says that if the patient really doesn t like them, they can be removed because nothing has been done to the structure of the tooth.
